“Postcard from Syria” – Novation Peak
This is a tough upload… I basically started out by composing some music using the Novation Peak and applying some slightly experimental (for me) sound processing techniques. I was going for an ambient, trippy kind of soundtrack but the results ended up being melancholy at best, though you might even say downright depressing to listen to!
So I then went in search of some ideas for a video to put with this depressing soundtrack that I had created and after a few dead-ends my attention turned to footage of the war in Syria. Now I must admit at this point that I have spent the last seven years aware of that conflict but – and I suspect like many people – not really engaging myself in knowing too much about it but keeping it at arm’s length. But in the end, to research for this video properly, I ended up spending in total about 12 hours watching online content on this tragic and appalling war, and I have now reached the point emotionally where I feel utterly disgusted and totally helpless.
So I just wanted to say here and now that this video is not in any way a political message, I included a few quotes from various documentaries and news stories to make it feel relevant but I’m not trying to point fingers or make any statement other than this one which is what a terrible catastrophe this is and what relentless and senseless suffering has and is still taking place for literally millions of normal, innocent people like you and me.
So for better or worse I am going to pay more attention to the events in Syria going forward. Although I feel helpless to do anything really meaningful to help I think the citizens of Syria deserve our on-going mindfulness and our desire, like theirs, for peace and safety.
PS. Coming back to the soundtrack, all sounds are from the Novation Peak !
